Close-up of a damaged etched marble surface

Natural marble is a beautiful, luxury flooring option, but it is also chemically reactive and physically soft. We frequently visit homes where expensive Italian or Makrana marble floors have been permanently dulled or stained within just months of installation.

In almost every case, the damage was caused by a well-meaning housekeeper using the wrong cleaning product. Below, we list the most common marble maintenance mistakes and explain how to avoid them.

1. Cleaning with Acidic Substances

This is the single most common cause of marble damage. Acidic liquids like lemon juice, vinegar, orange juice, and standard toilet cleaners (which contain hydrochloric acid) react instantly with the calcium carbonate in the marble.

The chemical reaction corrodes the stone surface, leaving a dull, white circular etch mark. Many homeowners try to scrub this mark away, which only makes the scratch area larger.

The Solution: Never use acid. Only clean marble with pH-neutral stone detergents or clean water.

2. Scrubbing with Rough Pads or Steel Wool

When faced with a stubborn stain, it is tempting to grab a kitchen scouring pad or wire brush. However, because marble is a soft stone, metal wires and rough green pads will leave fine scratch grids on the polished surface, ruining the mirror gloss.

The Solution: Only scrub stone floors using soft nylon brushes or clean microfiber cloths. If a stain has penetrated, it requires a chemical poultice rather than hard physical scraping.

3. Flooding the Floor with Water

While marble seems solid, it is actually porous. Flooding the floor with buckets of water during mopping allows water to seep down into the stone joints. This moisture can react with minerals inside the stone, causing iron oxidation (yellow rust spots) and loosening the grout joints.

The Solution: Mop with a damp, wrung-out microfiber mop. Never let water pool on tile joints.

4. Skipping Sealer Applications

Many homeowners assume that once marble is polished, it is protected forever. Polishing creates a smooth surface, but it does not close the stone's microscopic pores. Without an impregnating sealer, everyday spills like red wine, tea, or cooking oil will quickly penetrate and create deep, dark stains.

The Solution: Apply a professional stone sealer every 1 to 2 years.
